High Tunnel Raising

Hey fam, Hummingbird Springs Farm is getting our very own High Tunnel Greenhouse!

Last year we were awarded a contract with the Natural Resource Conservation Service, for their High Tunnel Program! We will be erecting a 30 ft by 72 ft High Tunnel on the farm, and we need your help!

Our friends from Cicada Calling Farm, in Bvlbancha (New Orleans) will be coming out to instruct us, and help us in erecting the High Tunnel! In addition, we will have helping hands from our other dear friends at Speak Easy Farm, Okla Hin Ikhish Holo, Bvlbancha Collective and other partnering amazing organizations in the area!

In addition to learning how to erect a high tunnel:

- Angie from Hummingbird Springs will help instruct people on details of, and how to apply for the USDA Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

- We will have a seed swap! Bring your extra seeds and some bags or envelopes

- Camping and fishing are always available (Bring your tent, camp chair, sleeping bags, and fishing gear

- Hiking: We are nestled between the Conecuh National Forest and Blackwater State forests, and it's mushroom season!

- Campfires and cookfires: We will have a campfire nightly, we will provide one large communal meal each evening, with the option to grill or cook over an open fire. Bring your favorite dish to share, food to cook, and an empty belly! The evenings of community events are my favorite and are filled with community, breaking bread, and lots of laughter.. Also, we are so remote there is zero light pollution, and you can actually see the Milky Way.

- Email Angie@HummingbirdSpringsFarm.org, or text at 504-595-7287 for the address!

Chemical-Free Beekeeping CRAFT Workshop! Sponsored by Alabama Sustainable Agriculture Network

What will we be learning?

In this workshop we’ll be talking about ways of caring for bees, that can sometimes be referred to as “Natural Beekeeping”. We will also explore some elements of hive design and building, and how the hives we build and tend compare to the homes bees choose in the wild. We’ll assemble two horizontal langstroth hives, and talk about how and why I’ve come to love these hives, especially for our particular region. To be clear, we will not be opening any hives or working with any live bees during this class.

Colin Hines is one of the beekeepers behind "Honey Wild" and "Honey I'm Home Hive Removals". They've been learning from and with the bees for the past 11 years, and working with rehoming wild hives for the past 5, and currently care for 18 hives spread out between Bvlbancha/New Orleans, Louisiana and Poplarville, Mississippi. They love having the bees in their life and helping others to learn and have their own relationship with the bees as well.<3

The Cover Crop Seed-a-thon and the November Holiday That Shall Not Be Named

Estongo fam! Some of the many goals here at Hummingbird Springs Farm is to improve soil health, attract beneficial insects, increase native plant biodiversity, and improve mycorrhizal growth in the soil. To do that, we will be planting cover crops over the entire farm. Link to Facebook Event here

We just purchased a beautiful cover crop seed blend of:

Common Alfalfa

Shoshone Sainfoin

Red Clover

White Sweet Clover

Yellow Sweet Clover

Hairy Vetch

Hayden Spring Oats

Elbon Cereal Rye

Kale

Baldy Safflower

Super Bee Phacelia

Boston Plantain

Trigger Chickory

and Small Burnett

The problem is, we don't have heavy farm equipment, and will be casting 1400 pounds (yes. 1400 pounds) of seed by hand.

We need your help! Come help us to cast cover crop seed! We can teach you all about the benefits of cover crops.

It will be a weekend of comradery with our Southeastern Indigenous relatives as we celebrate our resistance and resilience in the face of the November Holiday that shall not be named.

~The two days prior to the event (Nov 24 and 25) will be the Poarch Creek powwow in Atmore, AL- you should stop by on the way here!~

To show our appreciation for your help, one of our Southeastern relatives will demonstrate Indigenous fingerweaving technique and allow folks to start on their own fingerweaving textile. (Fingerweaving supplies will be given to a limited group of 12 people maximum, with children and BIPOC as priority)

Everyone is welcome to camp, or fish: bring your gear!

We will play stickball, and have a feast!

Please bring: Work gloves, a bucket or cloth sack for the seed, and a covered dish for our potluck feast!

For directions or the address, please email: Angie@Hummingbirdspringsfarm.org

or call/text: 504-595-7287

**If you are planning on only participating on Sunday, please check in before making the trip, as we frequently finish these tasks much faster than anyone expects**

Solar Dehydrator Workshop and Build

Click Here for Facebook Event Details

Come out to Hummingbird Springs Farm to learn all about food dehydrating using the power of the sun!

Food dehydration is a great way to store and preserve food. Solar-dried foods don't require electricity or fossil-fueled energy inputs to preserve or store them.

We will build a passive solar dehydrator, using open source plans from Utah State University. You can help with the build, or just watch and learn!

Folks are welcome to camp and take advantage of the time away in the country! Bring some swimwear or your fishing pole to swim or fish if you feel so inclined.

One vegan meal will be provided, folks can bring snacks, or food to cook over an open fire or grill. COVID precautions will be followed.

Hummingbird Springs Farm Tree Planting and Giveaway

https://fb.me/e/51iw6bZoC

Hummingbird Springs in a 31 acre indigenous food forest in the making in Florala, Al, with native plants and plant biodiversity as our priority.

The farm was previously a mono-culture peanut farm that was in the same family for 3 generations, and over 120 years. In the last year, we have planted over 100 trees, which isn't even a drop in the bucket to reforest 31 acres.

We have recently ordered over 1300 native trees from the Missouri Department of Conservation to plant here at Hummingbird Springs Farm (yes, 1300... its a long and funny story) and we need your help planting them!!!

We will provide food and drinks, port-a- potties, running water and plenty of space to set up a tent and camp out for the weekend if you wish. We have two stocked ponds where you can fish or swim, and if the skies are clear, a gorgeous view of the milky way! We will also give up to 5 trees (Bald Cypress or Eastern Red Cedar) to each person/family that volunteers to help plant trees!

Please spread the word and invite your friends!!
